Welcome To Neo-Tokyo

Based on the classic manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira was adapted into an anime movie in 1988. Otomo acted as the director for the film, bringing his story to life with stunning visuals that faithfully translated the art of the source material.

The narrative picks up decades after the complete obliteration of Tokyo, an event that started a third World War. Rebuilt as Neo-Tokyo, the cyberpunk-esque city is a breeding ground for criminality: gang warfare, political corruption, terrorism, and anti-government protests. Shōtarō Kaneda, the leader of the Capsules (a vigilante bōsōzoku gang), becomes embroiled in a fight to save his friend Tetsuo Shima when he is taken to a covert government facility. In this facility, espers — individuals with immense power — are experimented upon. The scientists soon discover that Tetsuo is also an esper, one who possesses abilities comparable to Akira, the individual responsible for the destruction of the original Tokyo. Nevertheless, those in charge refuse to end his life.

To prevent a second cataclysm, Kaneda and the espers attempt to stop Tetsuo, whose powers grow more and more erratic over time. Their efforts, however, are increasingly less effective.
