Enter the Batcave

LEGO Batman sets exist as part of Super Heroes, a theme launched in 2011. Prior to the debut of the new line, it had stood independently, with Dark Knight–themed kits being released between 2006 and 2008. Today, it falls under the broader window of DC Comics Super Heroes, which features dozens of other heroes and villains in the form of minifigures, including Superman and Wonder Woman.

It is also worth mentioning that these ideas sometimes overlap with different themes, such as Technic and DUPLO. The former specialises in complex vehicles, thereby making it suitable for products like the Batmobile, and the latter is catered to children, so people of all ages can enjoy the DC Universe.

In addition to the toys released by The LEGO Group, there have also been multiple LEGO Batman games and a theatrical movie. The first video game was developed by Traveller’s Tales and was available to purchase in 2008. Having received positive reviews, the title was succeeded by two sequels (DC Super Heroes and Beyond Gotham) and a villain-centric spin-off (LEGO DC Super-Villains). The LEGO Batman Movie, on the other hand, did not receive a follow-up, though it was praised for its humour and voice cast, which included Will Arnett as Bruce Wayne and Zach Galifianakis as the Joker.

LEGO Batman Characters: Heroes & Villains

Gotham is a city riddled with evildoers, the likes of which include the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Mr. Freeze. As such, it needs heroes who aren’t governed by the limitations of the law, heroes like the World’s Greatest Detective and his entourage of sidekicks: Catwoman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and other important figures in the Bat-Family whose names are too numerous to list. Assisted by their faithful butler, Alfred Pennyworth, each of these vigilantes patrols the streets each night, their exploits taking them to the far corners of the city, including Ace Chemicals and Arkham Asylum. Their nights may be difficult, but what this means is that there’s lots of opportunity for new toy sets to be created, the inspiration endless.

Shifting your attention from the traditional sets (which mostly depict large set pieces involving characters, vehicles, and locations), you might be interested in a LEGO Batman head. These are fantastic display pieces that, when built, take on the appearance of the Dark Knight’s cowl. Positioned near a piece of Batman LEGO Art, such as the one modelled after an original drawing by artist Jim LEE, this makes a strong impression on any collection.

Drive the Batmobile

In the DC Universe, Batman is renowned for being a hero with many gadgets, most of which are stored on his trust utility belt. However, there are some parts of his arsenal that don’t fit comfortably on his waist, and these can be found in his iconic hideout: the Batcave. What we are referring to is, of course, the Dark Knight’s vehicles — namely his car, plane, boat, and bike.

The most recognisable of these vehicles is the Batmobile, which throughout the decades has undergone many functional and aesthetic transformations. For example, the Batman 1989 Batmobile boasts a streamline design that was based on a Chevrolet Impala, whereas the Tumbler (which fans will recognise from The Dark Knight Trilogy) was made to appear militaristic.

Though the many iterations of the Caped Crusader’s car are undoubtedly the most sought-after pieces in the LEGO collection, we can’t forget the Batwing, Batboat, or Batcycle. Each of these gives the vigilante an edge in different scenarios — be they air, water, or narrow roads — and provides collectors with the opportunity to diversify their bat-themed display.
