A Villain In Fur Clothing

Created by British author Dodie Smith, Cruella de Vil first appeared in The Hundred And One Dalmatians (1956), a popular children’s book. In the story, she is described as the last of a wealthy family; however, it is made clear that her affluent appearance merely hides the reality of her crippling debt. To make a sizable profit, she attempts to steal the Dearly family’s Dalmatian puppies, intending to skin the animals and create fur coats. Fortunately, her scheme fails when they escape, and her liberated captives (assisted by Cruella’s abused Persian cat) enact their revenge by vandalizing her remaining stock of expensive furs.

In 2021, a live-action film explored the origins of the villain, focusing on the character before she became truly despicable. Played by actor Emma Stone, Estella Miller — Cruella de Vil’s former name — possesses a talent for fashion from an early age, but her gift is sometimes overshadowed by a tendency for wickedness. One day, she disobeys the wishes of her mother (Emily Beecham), who asked that her daughter stay in the car while she requested financial assistance from the attendees of an upper-class party. She sneaks inside and unwittingly attracts the gaze of three Dalmatians, which then knock her mother to a deadly plummet over a cliff edge. Orphaned, she finds herself befriended by two fellow street urchins, Jasper (Joel Fry) and Horace (Paul Walter Hauser). She forges a new life with them, but the trajectory of her fate changes when she meets Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), a legend in the fashion industry.
