Embrace What Makes You Different

Created by Walt Disney Productions based on a storyline by Harold Pearl and Helen Aberson, Dumbo is an animated film that was released in 1941. The plot centers around a large-eared elephant called Jumbo Jr., who is mocked mercilessly on account of his unusual physical appearance. Despite the unconditional love of his mother (voiced by Verna Felton), he is turned into a sideshow attraction by the circus to which he belongs. One day, a group of boys decide to physically abuse the young elephant, and his mother reacts with anger. Said to be deranged, the protective mother is locked away, an event that further drives a wedge between “Dumbo” (the derogatory name given to Jumbo) and his peers, who blame him for the whole affair.

Seeing Jumbo’s distress, a mouse called Timothy (Edward Brophy) offers his friendship and promises to make him a star. He convinces the ringmaster (Herman Bing) to make Jumbo the head of an elephant pyramid, but his clumsiness causes it to topple. Outcasted entirely, Jumbo finds himself involved with a firemen act orchestrated by the clowns, which he hates dearly. His fortunes, however, change when he discovers a strange ability of his oversized ears: he can fly. With this newfound skill, Jumbo gains fame and frees his mother from her captivity.

In 2019, the classic animated film was adapted to live-action. Tim Burton (known for films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Alice In Wonderland) directed the movie, using the acting talents of Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Alan Arkin, Danny DeVito, and Eva Green.
