A Musical Concert

Released in 1940, Fantasia was Walt Disney Productions’s third animated film, following in the footsteps of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Pinocchio (1940). The movie includes eight segments, each of which is accompanied by musical compositions created by Leopold Stokowski: Toccata And Fugue In D Minor, The Nutcracker Suite, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Rite Of Spring, Meet The Soundtrack, The Pastoral Symphony, Dance Of The Hours, and Night On Bald Mountain.

Originally, the film was going to be just one short, The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Based on the symphonic poem by Paul Dukas, this Silly Symphony puts Mickey Mouse (who had become less popular at the time) in the role of an apprentice to Yen Sid, a powerful sorcerer. Throughout the course of the short, he attempts tricks he has not yet mastered and loses control.

Fantasia 2000, a follow-up to the original film, was released in 1999. It adopted the format of its predecessor, including both live-action and animated segments. Well-known celebrities — such as James Earl Jones, Penn & Teller, Itzhak Perlman, Quincy Jones, Bette Midler, Angela Lansbury, and Steve Martin — introduced each of these segments, most of which were performed by the music of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In addition to the return of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the sequel featured seven new segments: Symphony No. 5, Pines Of Rome, Rhapsody In Blue, Piano Concerto No. 2, The Carnival Of The Animals, Pomp And Circumstance, and The Firebird.
