A New Wizarding World Story

Directed by David Yates, the first installment in the Fantastic Beasts film series was released in 2016. The movie, which was titled Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, is a spin-off of the Harry Potter series and draws from author J.K. Rowling’s written source material.

Set in 1926, the spin-off explores a different corner of the Wizarding World. Newton “Newt” Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a magizoologist (someone who studies magical creatures) and British wizard, travels to New York City and finds himself trying to recapture various creatures that escape after he accidently swaps suitcases with the “No-Maj" Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler). Newt — aided by Jacob, Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), and Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol) — manages to recover the magical beings, but new threats arise in the forms of an Obscurus and the return of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Colin Farrell/Johnny Depp).

Following the release of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, Yates started working on its sequel: The Crimes Of Grindelwald (2018). The film picks up after the capture of Grindelwald, leading toward his trial. However, he manages to escape from the custody of the Magical Congress Of The United States (MACUSA) and begins forming his army of pure-blood wizards and witches. To combat this threat, a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) asks Newt for help.
