Enter The Wilderness

Created by video-game developer Crytek, the first instalment in the Far Cry franchise originally released in 2004 on PC (it would later be re-released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2008), and it was intended to serve as the launch title for their CryEngine software. Eventually, the rights to the franchise were obtained by Ubisoft, a French developer that is well known for games such as Prince Of Persia and Assassin’s Creed.

A first-person-shooter franchise, the Far Cry games generally stand apart from each other, having few (if any) narrative links within each new entry. However, the foundation of the franchise remains constant, as players take control of a character who has been thrust into a wilderness environment in which they must survive. Over the course of the franchise’s history, there have been various numbered games and spin-offs, the latter of which includes Blood Dragon (2013), Primal (2016), and New Dawn (2019).

The original game centered around Jack Carver, a former Special Forces operator. Stranded on a cluster of islands in Micronesia, he searches for a missing journalist whom he was tasked with protecting and finds himself caught in the midst of a scientist’s deranged experiments. Later instalments, on the other hand, introduce new heroes: Jason Brody, Ajay Ghale, Dani Rojas, Takkar, and Jack Carver — among others. They are faced with hazardous terrains, such as tropical islands and mountains, and must build their arsenal of tools to survive.
