A New Frontier

Created by Joss Whedon (who is also known for Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Firefly is a space Western TV series that was produced by Mutant Enemy Productions, a company formed by Whedon. The first episode made its debut in 2002, introducing audiences to the crew of a Firefly-class spaceship called Serenity: Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), Zoë Alleyne Washburne (Gina Torres), Hoban "Wash" Washburne (Alan Tudyk), Inara Serra (Morena Baccarin), Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin), Kaywinnet Lee "Kaylee" Frye (Jewel Staite), Simon Tam (Sean Maher), River Tam (Summer Glau), and Derrial Book (Ron Glass).

Set in the year 2517, the show takes place in a distant solar system to which humanity fled after the collapse of the Earth-that-was. The remaining superpowers, the United States and China, unified to form the Alliance, a government that decided to establish complete control over the newly terraformed colonies. This resulted in a war, which concluded with the defeat of the Independents, many of whom fled to the outskirts. Sergeant Reynolds and Corporal Zoë Washburne are two survivors of the Battle Of The Serenity, the event that ultimately decided the outcome of the war. Throughout the series, they (and the rest of their crew) meet River and Simon Tam, two siblings who are on the run from the government after River was subjected to scientific experiments by the Alliance.

Despite the immense popularity of the series, having gained a large fanbase, it was cancelled after just one season. Fortunately, a 2005 movie titled Serenity continues the story, featuring the return of our favorite characters as they attempt to protect River from an assassin.
