Curse Of The Chinese Zodiac

Originating as a manga, Fruits Basket was created by writer/illustrator Natsuki Takaya. It was published by Hakusensha from 1998 to 2006 and adapted to an anime in 2001 by Studio Deen. In 2019, TMS Entertainment aired the first episode of a new animated TV series, which they renewed for multiple seasons.

The story centers around Tohru Honda, a young high-school student. After her mother dies in a car crash, she moves in with her grandfather; however, renovations and a disruptive family member mean that this doesn’t work out, so she takes to living in a tent. Despite her desire to live on her own, a landslide destroys her new accommodation, and she is compelled to accept the hospitality of the Soma family, who reside in a nearby house. One of the Somas is Tohru’s classmate Yuki, and she soon meets the rest of the clan, including Shigure and Kyo.

During an encounter with Yuki’s cousin, a ginger-haired boy, Tohru discovers the secret of the Somas: they are cursed to transform into animals from the Chinese zodiac. This happens when they are stressed, weakened, embarrassed, or embraced by someone of the opposite gender (who isn’t a member of the family). Promising that she won’t reveal their true nature, Tohru is allowed to continue living with the family. She makes it her mission to break the curse, a decision that brings her into contact with the vengeful zodiacs, one of whom is the mighty Akito.
