The Clown Princess

Harleen Quinzel first appeared in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series titled “Joker's Favor” (1992). Voiced by Arleen Sorkin, she was formerly an intern psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum who worked closely with an incarcerated Joker. Throughout their sessions together, Harley started to become infatuated with the supervillain and helped him to escape. Acting as Joker’s henchwoman and unappreciated romantic partner, Harley donned a red-and-black jumpsuit and began calling herself Harley Quinn. However, she started to realise over time that “Mr. J” was physically abusive and mentally manipulative, a realisation that motivated her to embark on a different path.

For a time, Harley joined forces with fellow female villains Poison Ivy and Catwoman, becoming the third link in a team known as the Gotham City Sirens. She has also featured prominently in modern comic-book line-ups of the Suicide Squad (Task Force X).

Outside of comics and television, Harley has featured in a number of live-action and animated films. Notably, she has appeared in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), played by actor Margot Robbie. Her early appearances include David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016), Cathy Yan’s Birds Of Prey (2020), and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021).
