When Is House of the Dragon Set?

Acting as a prequel to HBO’s critically acclaimed TV series Game of Thrones (2011–2019), House of the Dragon is set two hundred years prior to the War of the Five Kings, the multi-year event during which multiple prominent figures, including Rob Stark and Joffrey Baratheon, battled for the right to rule on the Iron Throne or to be independent of its claimant.

Predominantly, the narrative focuses on a civil war that took place when the Targaryens ruled over the Seven Kingdoms: the Dance of Dragons (or the Dying of the Dragons). This conflict is catalysed by the death of King Viserys I (played by Paddy Considine), whose title is desired by two of his children, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy).

Like Game of Thrones, the prequel show draws inspiration from the books written by author George R.R. Martin. Much of the plot is based on the second half of the novel Fire & Blood, which was released in 2018. Airing on HBO, the first episode of the live-action adaptation was itself released in late 2022.

Who Is in House of the Dragon?

The House of the Dragon cast features several well-known actors playing characters whom most Game of Thrones fans — except for those fond of the books — didn’t know before the debut of the show. In addition to those mentioned previously, some of these new faces include Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), the younger brother of Viserys I; Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), the head of House Velaryon and the one known as the ‘Sea Snake’; Princess Rhaenys Velaryon (Eve Best), the ‘Queen Who Never Was’; Lady Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cook), one of the king’s trusted advisors; Ser Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the Hand of the King; Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), a respected swordsman who hails from the Dornish Marshes; and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), a trusted ally of Prince Daemon.
