The Power Of Anger

Bruce Banner (most commonly known as the Hulk) was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #1 (1962). Originally, the character — while transformed — was depicted as a grey-coloured monster. However, Lee opted to change the colour to green after problems with colouration during the original comic series, an appearance that has since become synonymous with the hero.

Beginning as a meek scientist, Banner underwent his dramatic physiological transformation after an experiment involving the detonation of a gamma bomb. The resultant explosion exposed him to lethal doses of radiation, but he managed to survive. His unlikely survival was enabled by the ‘Hulk’, a large humanoid monster that emerges when Banner is angered. In this form, he possesses extraordinary powers: strength, durability, speed, and more.

The Hulk went on to become a founding member of the Avengers, featuring in The Avengers #1 (1963). To this day, he remains a prominent member of the team, having been part of the roster for The Avengers (2012), which takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In addition to his roles in ensemble films, the Hulk has starred in a multitude of solo releases. Actor Eric Bana played the eponymous character in director Ang Lee’s Hulk (2003), and Edward Norton introduced the hero to the MCU in The Incredible Hulk (2008) before being replaced by Mark Ruffalo for subsequent appearances.
