A Journey From Whale Island

Created by Yoshihiro Togashi (a writer and illustrator), Hunter X Hunter began as a Japanese manga series that was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump, a magazine owned by Shueisha Inc. The first chapter debuted in 1998, introducing audiences to the franchise’s central protagonist, Gon Freecess. A young boy living on Whale Island, Gon discovers that his father is still alive and has become a well-respected Hunter. In this world, the Hunter Association is one of the most prestigious non-governmental organizations in existence, its licensed members being specialists in hunting beasts, people, and treasures.

Having learned the truth about his heritage, Gon seeks to become a Hunter himself and departs his home to take their high-standards examination. While tackling the exam, he meets three other applicants, each of whom has their own motives for wanting to join their ranks: Kurapika (the last of the Kurta clan), Leorio (an aspiring physician), and Killua Zoldyck (a member of an infamous family of assassins). All except Killua pass the exam, the young assassin being failed after killing another examinee. Despite this setback, they remain strong allies throughout the course of the narrative.

In 1999, the first anime adaptation of the series was released on Fuji Television, totalling 62 episodes. This was succeeded by a second anime (by a studio called Madhouse), which ran from 2011 to 2014 and comprised 148 episodes. Additionally, there have been two theatrical films, continuing Gon’s story.
