A Spoonful Of Sugar

Directed by Robert Stevenson, Mary Poppins (1964) is a musical film based on author P.L. Travers’s books series of the same name. The plot centers around the Banks family, who are living in early 19th-century London. Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber), the children of George (David Tomlinson) and Winifred (Glynis Johns), are in need of a new nanny. Despite Mr. Bank’s insistence that they hire a strict nanny, the magical Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) descends from the sky with an umbrella in hand and offers her services.

Soon after her arrival, the children meet a friend of their new nanny: Bert (Dick Van Dyke), a cockney artist who specializes in painting pavements. Mary’s fantastical abilities transport them inside one of his works, where they engage in many fun activities and sing the iconic song "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious". Throughout the remainder of the film, they engage in many outlandish activities, including an on-the-ceiling tea party and a dance number on the rooftops. Slowly, Mr. Banks starts to become more relaxed, learning to appreciate spending time with his family.

In 2018, a sequel film was released: Mary Poppins Returns. This film picks up more than two decades after the events of the original, seeing the re-emergence of the eponymous nanny (Emily Blunt) helping an older Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) — now a parent to John (Nathanael Saleh), Annabel (Pixie Davies), and Georgie (Joel Dawson) — as he recovers after the death of his wife. Having taken a loan from the bank, he is at risk of losing his home if he doesn’t repay the money within the allotted time.
