This Tape Will Self-Destruct

The first instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise was released to theaters in 1996. Directed by Brian De Palma and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film follows the events of the ‘60s television series of the same name, which centered around the Impossible Missions Force (IMF): Dan Briggs (Steven Hill), Jim Phelps (Peter Graves), Cinnamon Carter (Barbara Bain), Barnard “Barney” Collier (Greg Morris), William “Willy” Armitage (Peter Lupus), and Rollin Hand (Martin Landau).

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is framed for the murder of his entire team while attempting to apprehend Alexander Golitsyn (Marcel Iureş), a rogue agent who is trying to steal a list of CIA agents working in non-official cover (NOC). Ethan being the only survivor, it is assumed that he is a mole, and he is compelled to escape so that he can investigate “Job 313”. To do this, he enlists the support of sympathetic IMF agents: Claire Phelps (Emmanuelle Béart), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), and Franz Krieger (Jean Reno). However, he soon discovers that some of his allies can’t be trusted.

Following the successful release of the first instalment, the Mission: Impossible franchise expanded with a number of sequels. Some of the later films dropped the numerical titles, adopting various sub-headings: Ghost Protocol (2011), Rogue Nation (2015), and Fallout (2018). With more than $3 billion in box-office revenue, these fan-favorites rank among the highest-grossing films of all time.
