Envisioned by Jim Henson, a prolific member of the entertainment industry, the Muppets made their first appearance in 1955 on the television series Sam And Friends (1995–1961). They later joined Sesame Street before starring in their own series: The Muppet Show (1976–1981). This catapulted them to international stardom, capturing the attention of its audience with a unique style of sketch comedy.

There are a large number of characters who have featured in the franchise, many of whom you will recognize: Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo (The Great Gonzo), Rowlf The Dog, Scooter, Animal, Pepe The King Prawn, Rizzo The Rat, and Walter — among others. Despite starting on Sam And Friends, these eccentric personalities quickly made the transition to different series, such as The Ed Sullivan Show, and even other forms of media.

Throughout their history, these characters have appeared in a number of films: The Muppet Movie (1979), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), Muppet Treasure Island (1996), Muppets From Space (1999), The Muppets (2011), Muppets Most Wanted (2014), and Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021).

A holiday classic and perhaps the most famous of these, The Muppet Christmas Carol is a reimagining of the classic story by author Charles Dickens. Actor Michael Caine stars as Ebenezer Scrooge, taking his place alongside Kermit The Frog/Bob Cratchit (Steve Whitmire). The Great Gonzo (Dave Goelz) assumes the role of Dickens and narrates the film with Rizzo The Rat (Whitmire).
