The Colors Of The Wind

Released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1995, Pocahontas is an animated movie that was directed by Eric Goldberg and Mike Gabriel. The story follows the eponymous character (voiced by Irene Bedard/Judy Kuhn), a Powhatan woman who lives with her tribe in Virginia. She is dismayed by the prospect of having to marry the warrior Kocoum (James Apaumut Fall), whom she views as dull. Seeking answers to her dilemma and a mysterious dream in which she saw a spinning arrow, she turns to her friends — Meeko The Raccoon (John Kassir) and Flit The Hummingbird (Frank Welker) — and a spiritual tree referred to as Grandmother Willow (Linda Hunt).

Having arrived in the New World after a long voyage, John Smith (Mel Gibson), the captain of a Virginia Company ship called the Susan Constant, encounters Pocahontas while exploring the wilderness. The pair are immediately fascinated by the differences between their cultures, and they start to develop a strong emotional connection to each other. Nevertheless, Chief Powhatan (Russell Means/Jim Cummings), the father of Pocahontas, disapproves of any positive interactions with the invading Englishmen. When their relationship is uncovered, the tensions between the colonists and the natives reach a breaking point, worsened by the death of Kocoum at the hands of an invader. Only Pocahontas has the ability to bring about a peaceful resolution.

Following its release, the film received praise for the musical score — which included the world-famous song “Colors Of The Wind” — and animation. However, some criticism was raised in regard to its presentation of native culture.
