“Blow Me Down!”

Created by Elzie Crisler Segar, Popeye made his first appearance on the pages of Thimble Theatre, a comic strip by King Features that started publication in 1919. Despite originating as a relatively minor character, the sailor being hired to take Castor Oyl and Ham to Dice Island, he soon became a large focus of the stories. In popular culture, he is best known for his distinctive appearance, having two oversized forearms and a continuously squinting (or missing) right eye. Notably, he also consumes vast quantities spinach, food that gives him a massive boost in strength.

In 1933, Fleischer Studios — a company owned by Max and Dave Fleischer — brought Segar’s characters to life with an animated series: Popeye The Sailor. Made for Paramount Pictures, the show predominantly depicts the spinach-eating hero (voiced by William “Billy” Costello and Jack Mercer) as he fights with Bluto (William Pennell, Gus Wickie, and Jackson Beck), who makes moves on the protagonist’s girlfriend, Olive Oyl (Bonnie Poe, Mae Questel, and Margie Hines). To beat his opponent, Popeye consumes cans of spinach, which give him the power to overcome Bluto’s large stature and win back his “sweetie”.

A live-action Popeye movie was released in 1980, starring actor Robin Williams as the eponymous character and putting Robert Altman in the director’s chair. The plot revolves around Popeye’s search for his estranged father (Ray Walston), a search that brings him to a port town called Sweethaven. In this town, he meets an eclectic cast of friends and enemies, such as the beautiful Olive Oyl (Shelley Duvall) and the brutish Bluto (Paul L. Smith).
