The Birth Of The Slasher

Released in 1960 by director Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho is a psychological horror film based on author Robert Bloch’s novel from the previous year. The plot follows Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a real-estate secretary who steals $40,000 so that she can run away with her boyfriend, Sam Loomis (John Gavin). While attempting her escape, she stops at the Bates Motel, where she meets its owner, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). Not long after overhearing an argument between Norman and his supposedly ill mother, Marion is stabbed to death in her shower. Wanting answers as to the sudden disappearance, Lila (Vera Miles) — Marion’s sister — confronts Sam. Arbogast (Martin Balsam), a private investigator, likewise starts looking into Marion’s whereabouts on behalf of the thief’s aggrieved employer.

Initially, Hitchcock's newest project received mixed responses from critics; however, the box-office take was substantial, and it was nominated for multiple Academy Awards. Owing to this, the film was succeeded by a number of sequels — Psycho II (1983), Psycho III (1986), Bates Motel (1987), and The Beginning (1990) — and a remake, the latter of which came out in 1998.

In 2017, a prequel TV series aired on the A&E cable network: Bates Motel. The show adopts a modern-day setting and explores the relationship between Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga). Encompassing five seasons, Bates Motel provides its own interpretation of the original film’s story in its final episodes.
