Welcome To Kumandra

Released in 2021 by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Raya And The Last Dragon is an animated film that is based in Kumandra, a fictional land once ravaged by evil beings called the Druun. To defeat the Drunn, the dragon Sisu (voiced by Awkwafina) forced all of her magic into a gem and used it to banish them. The people of Kumandra, having been turned to stone, were revived as a result of her efforts; however, they soon split into five tribes — Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail — after fighting over the power of the gem.

Many centuries after the formation of the tribes, the Heart Tribe possesses the Dragon Gem, and Chief Benja (Daniel Dae Kim) believes that Kumandra’s people can join together again. To this end, he organises a great feast to which all the tribes are invited. His daughter, Raya (Kelly Marie Tran), quickly becomes friends with the daughter of Chief Virana (Sandra Oh) of the Fang Tribe, Namaari (Gemma Chan/Jona Xiao), and shows her the location of the gem. However, she is betrayed; Namaari was using her on behalf of the Fang Tribe so as to claim the precious stone. In response, the other tribes join the fight and break the gem into five pieces, which inadvertently releases the Drunn.

The film follows an older Raya as she attempts to locate Sisu and banish the Drunn with the help of a newly crafted gem. Throughout the narrative, Raya is accompanied by a variety of colourful characters, such as Boun (Izaak Wang), Tong (Benedict Wong), Little Noi (Thalia Tran), and Tuk Tuk (Alan Tudyk).
