The Master Of Kung-Fu

Created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin, Shang-Chi made his debut in Special Marvel Edition #15 (1973). On the pages of the comic books, he is depicted as a master of martial arts, specialising in armed and unarmed forms of wushu. He was originally said to be the son of Fu Manchu, a villain that features in author Sax Rohmer’s series of novels; however, Marvel eventually lost the rights to this character and changed his name to Zheng Zu.

During Shang-Chi's early history, he was trained to be an assassin by his father. His allegiances shifted after he discovered the nature of his father’s business, and he subsequently chose to turn against the criminal empire that he was once a part of. Over the years, his vigilante career brought him into contact with various superheroes: Iron Fist (Danny Rand), White Tiger (Hector Ayala), and Jack Of Hearts (Jonathan Hart).

In 2021, the character joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in a solo film titled Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings. Actor Simu Liu plays the eponymous character, and he is joined by Awkwafina (Katy), Tony Leung (the Mandarin), Fala Chen (Leiko Wu), and Michelle Yeoh (Jiang Nan) — among others.
