With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility

Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Peter Parker (better known as Spider-Man) made his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962). A young high-school student, Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider while attending a science exhibit. This unlikely event granted him unique abilities: superhuman strength, speed, endurance, the ability to stick to any surface, and a sixth sense (referred to as his “spider-sense”). Thanks to his genius intellect, the young orphan was also able to craft web-shooters, gadgets that allow him to fire a strong adhesive (resembling webbing) from his wrists.

Donning a red-and-blue outfit, Peter tackles crime on the streets of New York City, motivated by the death of his uncle, Ben. His day-to-day life consists of his superhero activities — fighting villains such as the Green Goblin, the Sandman, Venom, and Doctor Octopus — and attempts to maintain an ordinary life. To help financially support Aunt May, whom he lives with, he starts working at the Daily Bugle, a newspaper managed by J. Jonah Jameson.

In addition to his appearances in comic books, Spider-Man has appeared in other forms of media, including animated series and live-action films. In 2002, director Sam Raimi helped to create the first instalment in a Spider-Man trilogy starring Toby Maguire. Actor Andrew Garfield embodied the role for a 2012 reboot, and Tom Holland replaced him when the character appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
