The Cameo King

Born in 1992, Stan Lee (or Stanley Martin Lieber) is one of the most famous individuals in the comic-book industry, having contributed toward the creation of many popular characters and appeared in various movies and TV series based on the source material. He joined Timely Comics (the publishing company that would become Marvel Comics) in 1939 and managed to rise from an assistant to a writer. His first publication came in the form of “Captain America Foils The Traitor’s Revenge,” a story that appeared in Captain America #3 (1941). To avoid being associated with the negative stigma around the medium, he adopted his iconic pseudonym, which he later made his legal name.

Lee advanced through the company quickly, helped by the departure of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Eventually, he took the place of publisher Martin Goodman, by which point he had contributed to the creation of many well-known characters (all of whom existed in a shared universe): Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, the X-Men, and Doctor Strange. Unlike traditional superheroes, these individuals possessed more human qualities, struggling with finances and having unstable relationships. This set Marvel characters apart and allowed them to compete with their contemporaries at DC Comics.

Owing to his success, Lee was given the opportunity to feature in a myriad of films and TV series. His minor cameo roles became popular among fans, and he continued his appearances until the point of his passing.
