The Start Of A Saga

Created by visionary director George Lucas, the first instalment in the Star Wars Original Trilogy was released in 1977. The film, which was retroactively titled Episode IV: A New Hope, explores the origins of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), a young moisture farmer living on the desert planet Tatooine. After purchasing two droids, R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), from roaming Jawas, he finds himself caught in the sightlines of the Galactic Empire. Stormtroopers are looking for the stolen plans to a destructive space station known as the Death Star, and their search leads them to Luke’s home. Finding his uncle and aunt murdered, the farmer travels with the former Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) and joins the Rebel Alliance. His path brings him into contact with Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), and Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher).

A New Hope became an immediate success, and this led to the creation of two direct sequels: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return Of The Jedi (1983). These films followed the conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, tracking Luke’s progression from farmer to full-fledged Jedi Knight. Years later, the franchise was revived for the Prequel Trilogy, a series of films that chronicled the fall of Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) and the rise of Darth Vader.
