Everybody Wants To Be A Cat

The last film project that was personally approved by Walt Disney, The Aristocats was released in 1970. Directed by Wolfgang Reitherman, the animated movie revolves around a family of cats — Duchess (voiced by Eva Gabor), Berlioz (Dean Clark), Marie (Liz English), and Toulous (Gary Dubin) — who live with Madame Adelaide Bonfamille (Hermione Baddeley), a retired opera singer with a large fortune. While creating her will, Adelaide states that her assets will go to her prized pets at the time of her death, a revelation that angers her eavesdropping butler, Edgar (Roddy Maude-Roxby). He will only receive the money after all the cats are dead, at which point he will likely be long gone.

To ensure that he won’t miss out on this wealth, Edgar devises a plan to dispose of the inconvenient inheritors. He serves the felines cream laced with sleeping pills and takes them to the countryside, where he ditches them after being attacked by two dogs, Lafayette (George Lindsey) and Napoleon (Pat Buttram). Abandoned in unknown territory, the helpless animals enlist the assistance of an alley cat known as Thomas O’Malley (Phil Harris). He becomes their loyal guide, helping them to return to their home city, Paris.

After the film’s release, it was praised as a well-structured story with an engrossing cast of characters. Additionally, the soundtrack by the award-winning Sherman Brothers — which includes songs such as “Ev'rybody Wants To Be A Cat” and “Scales And Arpeggios” — helped to create an appropriate atmosphere for the Parisian setting.
