A Night To Remember

In 2013, director James DeMonaco released The Purge, a dystopian horror film that centres around a yearly event in which every crime is made temporarily legal. The protagonists of the film, a wealthy family, must attempt to survive the night as mask-wearing psychopaths break into their home.

The Purge became immensely successful after being released in theaters. This led to the creation of multiple sequels: Anarchy (2014), Election Year (2016), The First Purge (2018), and The Forever Purge (2021). Over time, the franchise expanded its scope, leaving the confines of a suburban home and venturing to cities such as Los Angeles and New York.

Anarchy introduced audiences to a new set of characters: Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), Eva Sanchez (Carmen Ejogo), Cali Sanchez (Zoë Soul), Shane (Zach Gilford), and Liz (Kiele Sanchez). While attempting to avenge his son’s death at the hands of a drunk driver, Leo — an LAPD sergeant — finds himself helping a group of innocents caught in the open during the bloodiest night of the year.

In addition to the films, a two-season TV series aired on USA network between 2018 and 2019. The show shares continuity with its cinematic predecessors, taking place after Anarchy but before Election Year. Thanks to the episodic format, the series is able to explore the perspectives of multiple characters, highlighting the struggles of the American populace.
