Welcome To The Wild West

Directed by Michael Crichton, Westworld (1973) is a science-fiction Western film that centers around an adult amusement park called Delos. The park consists of three parts, each of which adopts a different theme: Western World, Medieval World, and Roman World. These worlds are populated by high-tech androids that are programmed to act in accordance with their assigned setting, and they are practically identical to regular living beings. Wealthy individuals can visit Delos and engage with its occupants without consequence. This could involve committing violent or sexual acts, which the androids are programmed to endure.

In the film, Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) and John Blane (James Brolin) visit Western World, hoping to enjoy a pleasant vacation. Martin is a first-time guest and doesn’t know what to expect, whereas Blane is well acquainted with Delos and its recreational activities. Unfortunately, during their stay, Delos starts to malfunction. Some of the androids begin acting out of character, and the Gunslinger (Yul Brynner), a firearm-wielding android created for instigating duels, shoots and kills Blane. This forces Martin to run for his life as the Gunslinger relentlessly pursues him.

Decades after the release of the original film and its sequel, Futureworld (1976), HBO aired a TV adaptation. Westworld (2016) features a similar Western-themed amusement park, which was created by Dr. Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins) and Arnold Weber (Jeffrey Wright). Like they did in film, androids — known as “hosts” — develop sentience and cause chaos. One of these hosts is Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood), the oldest android in the park.

Enticing viewers with its intriguing mysteries, the show became an immediate success. As a result, it spawned multiple seasons, which tracked the uprising of the hosts.
