The Birth Of Weapon X

James Howlett (better known as Wolverine or Logan) is a superhero character that exists in the Marvel Universe. He was created by three key figures in the comic-book industry — Roy Thomas (editor-in-chief at Marvel), Len Wein (a writer), and John Romita Sr. (art director) — and made his debut on the pages of The Incredible Hulk #180 (1974).

In the comics, he is depicted as a mutant, a sub-species of superpowered individuals, and can often be seen working alongside the X-Men. Despite his allegiances to Charles Xavier’s band of heroes, Logan frequently operates alone, embracing his animalistic side to enact violent retribution upon those who deserve it. He does this with the aid of his mutant abilities: regeneration and retractable claws (which were laced with adamantium when he was a subject of the Weapon X program).

In addition to the character’s decades-long history in comics, he has featured in various adaptations (such as video games, TV series, and movies). His most notable appearances come in the form of live-action film, in which actor Hugh Jackman became synonymous with the role. Jackman played the character for almost two decades, making his on-screen debut in Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000). He featured in many of the franchise’s sequels and eventually received his own spin-off trilogy, composed of X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and Logan (2017).
